the renewing of the mind

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2

I haven’t been able to watch TV as of late. Series that once interested me fall flat, and I’m more interested in watching Bible documentaries and The Bible Project and The Chosen series than watching secular TV. A devotional that I read about the renewing of the mind lit a fire inside me, causing me to be more aware of the thinking patterns that have been unfruitful for me.

We have a choice every day in what kind of content we put in our minds. I chose not to use social media because I didn’t want to clutter my mind with secular influence and take up space in my mind of useless things that would influence me negatively. For me, the three main areas that concern me are faith, family, and career. I want to center my life around these three main areas, and I also want to invest time and resources in improving myself.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8.

I want to cultivate thoughts that benefit my mental health. Over the course of the past couple of years, I’ve realized that I’ve accumulated negative thinking patterns and bad habits that have yielded weeds in my mind and my spiritual life. Jesus is the vine that yields fruit and all branches that don’t yield fruit should be cut off. Secular ways of thinking were toxic to my health and prevented me from succeeding in life.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2.

Transforming my mind and my life started with cultivating the right kind of habits. I started reading the Bible every day, getting a physical Bible and reading devotionals on the Holy Bible app. I asked the Holy Spirit to change my thoughts, purifying myself and lifting away the corrupt thoughts that had scattered my mind and focus and concentration.

Being consecrated was the best thing to have happened to me. In going back to the Catholic church and taking part of Communion and spiritual practices again, I was justified and went through the process of sanctification. Someday I will be glorified and uplifted into eternity.

Pray this prayer to ask Holy Spirit to change your mind.

Lord, help me fill my mind with what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable. Holy Spirit, I ask that You show me how to fill my mind and spiritual stomach with things that help me become more like King Jesus.
